What body height does this frame fit?

A 56 road bike — for what height? The number alone does not say: a 56 is a different frame at every brand. Stack and reach do say, and they are in every geometry chart. Enter them and you see from what height to what height the frame fits, and where a different stem still helps.

Where do I find stack and reach?

In your bike's geometry table: open your model on the manufacturer's site and go to the “Geometry” tab. Stack and reach are given in millimetres, one column per frame size. You cannot measure them off the bike itself — they are derived figures, not tube lengths.

An older model year the manufacturer no longer lists? These collections often carry old models too. They are other people's sites — this page fetches nothing from them, it only points the way: Geometry Geeks99 Spokes

Only model and size from the listing? Look up stack and reach with an AI

Then paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. The AI answers with a link to this page; the calculation happens here. Check stack and reach against the maker's page, an AI easily mixes up sizes and model years.

Example: a size 56 frame, Road bike, with 565 mm stack and 395 mm reach. For your frame, enter its numbers above.

This frame fits people from about 171 to 187 cm. Without changing anything, 177 to 181 cm. With a very long stem it just about fits from 187 to 191 cm as well.

At 180 cm: fits

Height and length fit without changing anything.

Calculated with average proportions: legs and arms in the usual ratio to body height. Stem and spacers as most bikes come from the factory; everyone sets the saddle to their own recommendation.

Check it in the bike fit with your measurements

Why the number on the frame is not enough

One brand measures the seat tube to the centre of the top tube, the next to the top, and at the third the size is just a name. Even within one brand, an endurance bike sits a good 30 mm higher than the race model of the same size. Every maker measures stack and reach the same way: from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube, once vertically and once horizontally.

What the bands say

Riding style moves the bands: to ride lower you need a lower front at the same height. Longer legs or shorter arms than usual put you somewhere else — the bike fit calculates with your own measurements and shows the same band for your proportions.

Buying used

A listing usually gives only the size. Ask for brand, model and year: with those you find stack and reach at the maker or on one of the collections above. What this page does not calculate is standover — whether you can stand over the top tube. Check that when you try the bike.

No bike in mind yet?

Then the other way round: "Frame size calculator" gives you the stack and reach window for your height, and you look in the geometry charts for the frame that falls inside it.
